Staff Profiles: Heather Hilton

Bay Shore Librarian Heather Hilton

As a Long Island native, it is an honor to work for Touro College School of Health Sciences in Bay Shore NY. Being afforded the opportunity to interact with all of the aspiring professionals and assist them in their research as a librarian fills me with joy.

I became interested in the field of Library and Information Science when I returned to Stony Brook University to earn my Bachelors of Arts in Humanities as an adult student. I learned that I love information and assisting others in locating their own resources. As an undergraduate student, I was allowed to take two graduate level courses in Library Science and these cemented my love of the field and strengthened my resolve to continue my education.  Attending Queens College in Flushing I earned my Masters of Library Science.

My favorite part of the job is searching for information to assist a student. In fact the harder the search is the more I tend to enjoy it, especially when I find what is needed. Admittedly, this can also be frustrating, especially if I cannot find the information (in part or in full) in the language needed. I encountered a particularly memorable incident of this nature in attempting to locate an English translation of one article to no avail, even after exploring the possibility of using translation software. Setbacks like this only make me more determined to solve similar issues should they arise.

I tend to geek out over the 3D printing abilities we have at Bay Shore and the applications of items created with it. It’s amazing to design something and see it created, to watch it evolve from a 2D idea on a screen to a 3D physical item.

New Orleans is one of my favorite spots in the country and is one of my ideal vacation places. I would love to be able to go with all my friends and my mother to experience the city again. The last time I was there was in 2006 when I was helping rebuild after Katrina. It would be fantastic to see the city again as it has been revitalized. Packing is always easy as I never leave home without my phone (to use for music, my camera, and my communication device) or my Kindle (as I need to be able to read wherever I go).

Other than reading, my main hobby is gaming. It doesn’t matter if it is a tabletop game, a board game, a card game, or a computer game, I love playing games. There is nothing better than getting my friends together for a game night and dinner. I’m also a total geek, I love sci-fi/fantasy books and movies, comic books, gaming, and geeky T.V. shows. It’s one of my worst kept secrets.
