Have You Heard Any Good Books Lately? (Part 1)

Carol Schapiro with a Book That Really Speaks to Her

I was once asked “Does Touro have any books on tape?”

Books on tape? This was the image in my head:

Books ON Tape

That can’t be right. Then I thought this:

It’s times like these when a librarian employs the “reference interview”. This is a process whereby the librarian asks incisive questions to determine EXACTLY the informational needs of the patron. So I inquired incisively “What do you mean by ‘books on tape’?” Everything was clarified when I heard the reply, “You know, something I can listen to in the car.”

Ahh! Now I get it. I used the catalog to investigate our audio holdings, both musical and non-musical. It was no easy task. I found many results, consisting of mostly lectures and some recorded books in the subject areas of Judaica, history and a smattering of fiction. Catalog records of these holdings had the description “audio –CD”, or just “audio”.  (What are we talking about here, reel-to-reel or 8-track tape? I needed to further examine the description to determine that “audio” means cassette tapes.) For your reading enjoyment, and possibly listening enjoyment, a list of everything I found follows. I trust it is complete, but hey, you never know. You can click on the links below to learn in which Touro location these physical holdings are located.

Zen lessons: The art of leadership

Our collection development policy requires librarians to select materials with “lasting value” and to consider “the sustainability of format to content”. Although many of our audio items would now be suitable for the Museum of Obsolete Media, tapes and CDs did not appear to be on the verge of extinction when they were purchased. Many of them have never been converted to streaming media, and can only be heard in their archaic original media format.  Some of these items, particularly titles from the English Torah Tape Series are rare in library collections, and would be worthwhile to our patrons. To listen, you will have to dig out your grandma’s cassette player, or inquire whether your Touro branch library has the appropriate hardware on which to play them. With any luck at all, you will be able to listen to them in the car.
