Ice Cream Social: Facts for National Ice Cream Month

Being that it is summer I figured I would write a lighthearted blog on a lighthearted topic – Ice Cream.

July is National Ice Cream Month. Yes – National Ice Cream Month (and National Ice Cream Day) are officially recognized holidays designated in 1984 by President Ronald Reagan after receiving a joint resolution from Congress on the matter. It seems that even Congress can agree on their love for this sweet treat.

Here are some little known facts you may not know about our favorite dessert:

  • The average American eats 23 pounds of ice cream a year (and I am definitely one of them).
  • There is 7 pounds of milk in each gallon of ice cream.
  • About 10% of all milk produced in the United States is used for ice cream.
  • Since 1920, the US production of regular ice cream has gone from 170 million gallons per year to 900 million gallons per year.
  • The ice cream industry contributes more than $39.0 billion to the United States economy and creates more than 188,000 jobs.
  • Vanilla is the most popular flavor of ice cream due to its versatility and ability to mix well with other desserts.
  • Chocolate ice cream is the second most popular flavor followed by: Cookies N’ Cream, Mint Chocolate Chip and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough.
  • Hot fudge is Americans favorite ice cream topping.

As most of you know, I cannot write a blog without bringing up animals so here I go. Ice cream isn’t just loved by humans. It seems animals love ice cream as well. One in 5 Americans eat ice cream with their pets (I am one of them – my cats love getting a dish of Haagen Dazs Vanilla Bean). The pet industry has taken notice of our love for sharing ice cream with our pets. Purina has released an ice cream line for dogs called Frosty Paws that is available in most supermarkets. And over the past few years, PetSmart has hosted doggie-human ice cream socials in various cities and pop up locations. These socials are for dog lovers and their furry friends to meet and mingle with their like-minded compadres.

Pets with Ice Cream

But all this ice cream does have a dark side (I won’t bring up calories). Some unfortunate humans (and most cats) experience the mysterious “brain freeze” when they eat ice cream. Brain freeze is an intense, headache sensation that lasts a few seconds when consuming something cold too rapidly. But rest assured, this is just the harmless side effect of the blood vessels on the roof of your mouth quickly constricting due to the cold temperatures. The simple solution for brain freeze is to slow down, savor, and enjoy your ice cream bite by bite rather than wolfing it down. I know it’s hard. But you can do it.
