Whether you’ve been at Touro for a few semester or you just joined us this Spring, there a few key steps all students should take to make sure you’re set up to do your best. Writing and research is an inescapable part of most college courses, but it can sometimes be a frustrating process. The good news is that the library is here for all your research needs, from finding sources and understanding new information to academic writing and creating citations. In fact, a recent report released by the ALA found that, “students who receive library instruction as part of their courses achieve higher grades,” and gain “confidence with the research process.” If that sounds good to you, make sure that you follow these tips!
- Register for the library: Registering with your local Touro library branch is different from registering for your classes. Once you receive your Touro ID bring it to the library branch at your college and register with them for borrowing privileges. They will ask you for some basic contact information that we use to get in touch with you should we need to. The whole process only takes a couple of minutes and once it’s finished you will be allowed to borrow library materials including books, DVD’s and at some branches even iPads. (*Your account expires at the end of every semester so come in at the beginning of every new semester to update your information).
- Register for an off-campus access account: Off-campus access allows you to use the Touro databases from wherever you are at any time. Whether you are trying to access the databases from home or if you are vacationing in another country, you will need to log in to your off-campus access account in order to use the Touro databases. To create an off-campus access account you need to fill out the form found at: http://www.tourolib.org/services/off-campus. (*Create an account with an email address that you use regularly and with a username and password that are both easy for you to remember and not easily hacked. Many students forget what their username is or which email address they signed up with and then have to contact Technical Support for help).
- Use LibGuides: A LibGuide is a collection of resources on any topic compiled by a librarian. The Touro LibGuides are created by Touro librarians to assist you in a number of areas. Our selection of LibGuides range from Jewish studies to English to Health Sciences and everything in between. They are a great place to start your research if you are having trouble identifying what resources/databases will be most helpful to you. The LibGuides can be found by going to: http://libguides.tourolib.org/.
- Talk to a librarian: My last tip is the most important. Don’t hesitate to speak to a librarian if you need to. Whether you simply need to know where a book is or need in depth help researching any topic, the Touro librarians are here to help you. We all take great pride in knowing that we have helped our students to the best of our abilities. Even if there is something we don’t know or we don’t have, we can still find out where to go to find what you need.
