Giving Back this Thanksgiving

Touro College has been working with Long Island Cares to ensure that members of our local community have something to be thankful for this year!

Over the past several weeks; students, faculty and staff have been bringing in canned food, desserts, trimmings, non-perishable food items (including food and treats for the family pet) and other essential household supplies.

Last year, we received 475lbs of food from the Touro College community.  This year, we are on track to beat that number for our food totals!  Three large donation bins of warm clothing was also collected.  All items are transported to the Long Island Cares headquarters in Hauppauge, New York.

The giving doesn’t stop there either.  Volunteers will then spend hours sorting and redistributing the food to different facilities.  The food will then be prepared by more volunteers and hot meals will be served on Thanksgiving. For others who need a helping hand this year, baskets containing all the Thanksgiving necessities will be made available as well.

For those who are elsewhere in New York and in need of assistance, find your local food bank.

On behalf of Touro College Libraries, have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Special thanks go out to the Students, Staff and Faculty at Touro College, Bay Shore location for collaborating to make this drive so successful!  Matt Alper and Alvin Munian, Student Government Co-Presidents made numerous heartfelt pitches to their classmates. The beautiful  Giving Tree artwork & posters were created by Liz Holzer, DPT Clinical Education Administrative Assistant.  Robin Morrell, Associate Director of Fiscal Affairs and Susan Powers, Executive Assistant to the Dean, made many trips to the stores to purchase items with monetary donations that were also gratefully accepted. Acknowledgement for sponsorship goes out to Dr. Louis Primavera, Dean School of Health Sciences and John Pacifico, Operations Facility Manager for allocating time and space to pursue this mission.
