America needs PAs and Touro is supplying them. Touro’s six semester, 24 month professional program leads to the Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. The program is offered at the Bay Shore and Manhattan campuses.
WHAT IS A PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT?
(From Touro College School of Health Sciences Physician Assistant Program brochure)
“Physician Assistants (PAs) are health care professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. The physician/PA team relationship is fundamental to the PA profession, and enables both to optimize their time and training to effectively deliver quality patient care. Within the physician/PA relationship, PAs exercise autonomy in medical decision-making and provide a broad range of diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive, and health maintenance services. The clinical role of PAs includes primary and specialty care in medical and surgical practice settings. PA practice is centered on patient care and may include educational, research and administrative activities.”
Here at the Bay Shore campus library we work very closely with our PA students and we get to know them well. We are impressed with how dedicated they are to the program. The first-year students visit our library daily to study, do research and complete assignments. The second-year students visit us every 5 weeks in between their clinical rotations. They check out books from our extensive collection to help them prepare for their upcoming rotations and to study for the exams that come at the end of each rotation. In addition, they are writing a thesis paper during this time, and we provide support to help them learn everything from how to choose a topic to how to format their paper in APA style. Jamie Saragossi MLS, the Chief Librarian at Bay Shore, provides information literacy sessions for the PAs at each stage of the program. She is also the embedded librarian in the PA’s Evidence-Based Medicine class and the creator of our PA Subject Guide which links to all the most important materials and resources these students will need. We are proud of our PA students and honored to be a part of their journey to becoming health care providers. How are you celebrating PA Week?
