The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a final guideline on September 23rd, 2013 for developers of mobile medical applications, which have the potential to revolutionize  health care. The agency will not enforce these tailored requirements for the majority of mobile apps, which pose minimal risk to consumers, but intends to focus oversight on mobile medical apps that are used as an accessory to a regulated medical device, or that transforms a mobile platform into a regulated medical device. Mobile medical apps that undergo FDA review will be assessed using the same regulatory standards and risk-based approach that the agency applies to other medical devices.
